Signs you might need a tooth filling

Tooth decay doesn’t always have obvious signs or symptoms. Luckily, regular dental exams can help reveal early signs. In many cases, your dentist can detect dental decay or dental caries (cavities) long before you feel anything.

That said, there are some common signs you might need a tooth filling:

  • Tooth sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweets
  • Persistent toothache or discomfort
  • Visible dark spots or small holes in a tooth
  • Pain when biting down or chewing

As tooth decay progresses into a deep cavity, symptoms can become more noticeable and more uncomfortable. Treating it early with a tooth filling is the simplest way to protect your tooth and prevent more extensive treatment later.

Dental Model With DifferentTreatments

Types of dental fillings:

Multiple cavity treatment options are available. The right choice depends on the size and location of the cavity, as well as your overall dental health. At Creedmoor Road General Dentistry, we take a personalized approach to treatment, recommending the option that best supports your dental function and the appearance of your smile.

Composite fillings

Composite fillings (also called resin fillings, tooth-colored fillings, and white fillings) are the most common choice for dental fillings. Your dentist will carefully match your composite filling to your surrounding teeth to ensure a consistent, natural appearance. Resin fillings are durable, aesthetically pleasing, and a great option for restoring teeth that have been affected by tooth decay.

Amalgam fillings

Amalgam fillings are made from a combination of different metals and have been used for many years. They’re commonly used for back teeth and are known for strength and durability, but they aren’t ideal for front teeth because they do not blend with your natural smile. At Creedmoor Road, we’re happy to help patients decide whether composite or amalgam fillings are right for their specific dental needs.

Inlays & onlays

For larger areas of decay that don’t require a full crown, inlays and onlays can provide a strong, long-lasting solution. These restorations are custom-made to fit your tooth and are used when a standard filling may not be sufficient to restore structure and strength. They offer added durability while still preserving as much of your natural tooth as possible.

What to expect at Creedmoor Road General Dentistry

Getting a dental filling isn’t something most people look forward to. But at Creedmore Road, our goal is to make every dental visit as comforting and supportive as possible.

Your visit will start with a thorough exam. If needed, we can take digital X-rays to determine the extent of tooth decay. Once we’ve identified the area, we’ll numb your tooth to ensure a pain-free experience.

Next, we carefully remove the decayed portion of the tooth, followed by placing the filling material and shaping it to achieve a natural appearance. For many patients, the experience is much easier than they expected. Best of all, they leave with greater comfort and confidence.

What is the cost of a dental filling?

The cost of a dental filling varies depending on the type of filling and the extent of the tooth’s decay. Small fillings are usually more affordable, while bigger or deeper cavities can require more time and care. Before any treatment begins, our team will walk you through your options and provide a clear estimate so you know exactly what to expect.

In most cases, dental insurance will cover a significant portion of the cost of a filling. However, coverage can vary by plan, and patients are often responsible for a portion of the cost. Our care team is happy to help you confirm your benefits and explore out-of-pocket costs prior to your procedure so there are no surprises.

No, dental fillings should not be painful. We take a gentle, patient-first approach to every procedure, using numbing techniques to keep you calm and comfortable throughout your visit. Many patients are surprised by how easy and stress-free the experience feels.

With proper care, dental fillings can last many years. In some cases, they last a lifetime. A filling’s longevity depends on the size and location of the filling, your oral hygiene habits, the materials used, and regular dental checkups.
