Real Patient Admiring Her Dental Crowns

What are tooth crowns or caps?

A dental crown, also called a tooth crown or dental cap, is a restoration that fully covers a damaged tooth. Not only do crowns restore the shape and appearance of a weak tooth, they also strengthen it and protect it from further damage.

Modern crowns are made from high-quality materials like porcelain crowns, ceramic crowns, and zirconia crown options. These materials work well for crowns thanks to their durability and natural appearance. Once placed, your crown is the new outer surface of your tooth, and it allows you to chew, speak, and smile comfortably.

How long does it take to place a crown (procedure)?

The length of your dental crown procedure depends on your unique circumstances and needs. It may also depend on the materials chosen. CEREC crown technology allows dentists to design, create, and place your crown all in a single visit.

Other crown procedures require 2-3 visits. During the initial visit, impressions are taken of your teeth. A temporary crown is then placed while your permanent crown is being created in an offsite lab. Once ready, your permanent crown is placed and adjusted to ensure optimal fit and comfort. Your dentist will help you decide whether a CEREC crown is right for you.

What can dental crowns fix (capabilities)?

Dental crowns help fix a variety of conditions. Usually, they’re used to repair and protect teeth that are damaged. You might choose a crown to fix:

  • A cracked or broken tooth
  • Severe tooth decay that cannot be treated with a filling
  • A worn or weakened tooth
  • A tooth after a root canal procedure
  • Crown replacement for an old or failing crown
  • Cosmetic improvements for misshapen or discolored teeth

Crown tooth restoration protects and preserves your smile by offering strength, support, and a natural appearance. They’re one of the most common and versatile restorative dentistry procedures, and Dr. Allen is proud to offer a variety of crown options at his Raleigh office.
