What are dental implants & what are they made of?
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Over about three to six months, the bone bonds to the post — a process called osseointegration. A connector (the abutment) and a custom crown are then attached, giving you a fixed tooth that looks and works like a natural one.
Every implant has three parts:
- The implant post — a titanium screw that sits in the bone and acts as the new root.
- The abutment — a small connector that links the post to your new tooth.
- The crown — the visible tooth, shaded and shaped to match your smile.
Because the implant stands on its own, the healthy teeth beside it don’t need to be reshaped to support it. Unlike a bridge or partial denture, an implant also stimulates the jawbone, which helps preserve the bone where the tooth used to be.
Which Implant Option Fits Your Situation?
The right plan depends on how many teeth you’re missing and the health of the teeth you still have. Most patients fall into one of three groups.
One missing tooth: single tooth implant
One implant, one crown. It’s the most common type of implant, and the closest thing to getting your original tooth back. It’s ideal after an extraction, a failed root canal, or a tooth lost to injury.
Several missing teeth in a row: implant-supported bridge
When two or more neighboring teeth are missing, two implants can anchor a bridge of three or four teeth. You get fewer implants and a lower cost than replacing each tooth individually, and your natural teeth are left untouched.

Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most adults who are missing a tooth can get an implant. You’re likely a good candidate if:
- You’re an adult whose jaw has finished growing
- You have one or more missing teeth, or a tooth that can’t be saved

- Your overall health allows a minor oral surgery

A few things call for extra planning, but they don’t automatically rule you out. These include smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, certain medications that affect bone, and past radiation to the head or neck. Dr. Allen will review your health history and 3D scan with you, and tell you plainly if an implant isn’t the right fit.
What If You've Been Told You Don't Have Enough Bone?
Bone loss is one of the most common reasons people assume they can’t get an implant — and often it’s fixable. When a tooth is lost, the jawbone around it slowly shrinks. A bone graft adds bone-building material to the area, so there’s a solid foundation for the implant.
- Socket preservation is a small graft placed right after an extraction, so the bone is ready when it’s time for your implant.
- Larger grafts rebuild bone that has already been lost. They usually add a few months of healing before the implant is placed.
Your 3D scan shows exactly how much bone you have, so you’ll know before treatment whether a graft is needed and what it adds to your estimate.

Should you see a general dentist or a surgeon for an implant?
Many general dentists with implant training place and restore single implants, while more complex cases, major bone grafts, sinus lifts, or medically complex patients are often referred to an oral surgeon or periodontist. Dr. Allen is a general dentist.
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
With good care, a dental implant can last for decades. Research backs this up: a 2024 review of long-term studies found that more than 90% of implants were still in place after 10 years, and most were still in place at 20 years (Kupka et al., Clinical Oral Investigations, 2024). The crown on top may eventually need replacing from normal wear, often after 10 to 15 years.
What helps your implant last:
- Brushing twice a day and cleaning around the implant daily
- Regular cleanings and checkups, so we can spot gum inflammation early
- Not smoking
- Keeping conditions like diabetes well managed
- A night guard if you clench or grind
Implants can fail, though it’s uncommon. The most common cause is peri-implantitis, a gum infection around the implant, which is why ongoing checkups matter. Results vary from person to person.

Why are some implants advertised for under $2,000?
Advertised prices don’t always include the same things. Some cover the full implant, abutment and crown; others leave out the 3D scan, extraction, bone graft or temporary tooth. When comparing offices, ask for a complete written estimate. Ours lists every line item, so you can compare fairly.
Does dental insurance cover implants?
It depends on your plan. Many plans pay part of the crown, extraction or exam, up to your annual maximum, while some exclude implants entirely. We’ll check your benefits before treatment and show you what your plan is expected to pay. HSA and FSA funds can also be used for implant treatment.
Do I need a bone graft for a dental implant?
Not always. A graft is needed when there isn’t enough bone to hold the implant securely, common when a tooth has been missing for a while. Your 3D scan shows exactly how much bone you have, so you’ll know before treatment begins whether a graft is needed and what it adds to your estimate.
Does getting a dental implant hurt?
The area is fully numbed with local anesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel pain during placement. Afterward, most patients have mild soreness and swelling for a few days, usually managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. If you’re anxious, we offer COMFORT OPTIONS.
How long does the whole implant process take?
Most single implants take about 4 to 7 months from consultation to final crown. The implant itself is placed in one visit. Most of the time is healing while the bone bonds to the implant. If a bone graft is needed first, add a few months.

For a single missing tooth, an implant usually lasts longer and doesn’t require reshaping the healthy teeth beside it. A bridge costs less upfront and is finished in a few weeks, and it can make sense when the neighboring teeth already need crowns.
